Salary: £80,000-£100,000 (depending on experience)

Labour Together is a unique organisation which supports, inspires and - when necessary - challenges Labour in power to ensure it governs well and wins again, creating a fairer and more hopeful country.  At a time of great challenges, we must craft  a compelling political message and build relationships which will take Labour to a second victory.  Alongside this our work continues to delve deeply into policy development and long-term strategy. The task ahead is immense. We are seeking an exceptional political strategist who will be laser focussed on meeting it.


The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Political Strategy to join at an important time for Labour Together and the Labour government. This senior role will shape our electoral strategy as we help Labour maintain its electoral coalition and prepare for victory in 2028/29.  Working directly with our CEO and Executive Director, you will lead our strategic outputs, developing compelling narratives that translate complex political challenges into clear, persuasive messaging.  The ideal candidate will have a sophisticated understanding of the current political landscape, strong networks across the Labour movement, and experience in political communications and strategy development. You will help Labour Together fulfill its mission as both a critical friend and strategic partner to the Labour government.


Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and support the implementation of Labour Together's long-term strategy to help Labour govern well and win again at the next election

  • Support the government's political messaging by anticipating and helping to counter threats

  • Provide high-level strategic recommendations and advice to the government on message development and long-term narrative

  • Work closely with the CEO and Executive Director to build Labour Together's political influence

  • Advise on production and publication of Labour Together outputs, including reports, briefings, and strategic recommendations

  • Develop and oversee Labour Together's narrative projects that help Labour maintain and expand its electoral coalition

  • Coordinate closely with other directors to integrate narrative and policy, building a rigorous evidence base for the arguments Labour Together develops

  • Build and maintain key relationships with stakeholders across Labour, government, and the wider progressive movement

  • Represent Labour Together in the media and at events

  • Work with our research team to ensure insights from polling and focus groups inform our strategic work

  • Build networks across government, media, and creative sectors to strengthen the Labour movement’s overall strategic communications capacity


Essential Skills Required

  • Excellent understanding of the current political environment, with experience advising senior leaders 

  • Extensive political network 

  • Experience developing political strategy, particularly around electoral politics

  • Deep understanding of UK electoral geography and voting patterns

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience of leading teams in a political environment

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with senior stakeholders

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to deliver high-quality outputs to tight deadlines

  • Understanding of the political centre ground and the values of electorate

  • Demonstrable writing skills for political audiences, with the ability to craft compelling narratives

  • Politically astute communicator and storyteller who understands both how government works and how people connect with ideas


Desirable Skills

  • Media handling experience and comfort with broadcast interviews

  • Strong IT skills

  • Quantitative and/or qualitative research experience

  • Meticulous and reliable, with strong attention to detail

  • Strong skills using both quantitative and qualitative evidence

  • Experience working with polling data

  • Understanding of political messaging in both traditional and digital media

  • Experience of working closely with elected officials

  • Understanding of the global centre-left political landscape and the challenges facing progressive parties around the world
